The filter worked so well on the hatchery that I converted a large Hayward sand filter that I had been using on my koi pond into a bead filter.  The sand filter was lived up to it's reputation of caking and channeling.  It frequently needed to be opened and the sand stirred up, as the backwashing wasn't strong enough to do the job.  The interesting part of the conversion was that the sand filter had a multi-port valve on top and I needed a diatomaceous earth style valve as a side mount.  The rest of the conversion was simple PVC fittings and slotted pipe.  The addition of a blower as well to help in backwashing has made this a truly hassle free filter.
